Hotel/Restaurants Week: Ice Hotel, Sweden

Because it’s very hot outside, I thought an Ice Hotel will refresh us this summer.

In Sweden you can find the Ice Hotel, an hotel which works every year, from December to April, and is made in Ice. It is located in the village of Jukkasjärvi, about 17 km from Kiruna, Sweden, and was the first ice hotel.
It is dependent upon constant sub-freezing temperatures during construction and operation. For the walls, fixtures, and fittings the materials are entirely ice or compacted snow, and are held together using a substance known as snice, which takes the place of mortar in a traditional brick-built hotel.
The entire structure is made out of ice blocks (more than 30,000 tons) taken from the Torne River. The architecture is very detailed and it creates a very peaceful environment. Each year,  the hotel is reconstructed , which makes the visit unique and an unforgettable experience.

And here are the communal areas of the hotel:

    • Even if in an Ice Hotel it never gets colder than –5 to -8ºC, regardless of the fact that the outdoor temperature sometimes drops down to -30º, it’s allways good to have something to warm up !
